2019-2020 3rd Grade Parent Survival Handbook
Academics and Work Habits
Hello! Welcome to third grade at North Columbus Elementary School. I am so excited about this school year. It is my goal to provide a quality educational program that will inspire your child to create, discover, and achieve. Below are a few procedures and items I will address for this school year.
Homework/Planners
Students will have a binder that will come home every day. I will have a weekly agenda inside the binder. It will indicate the homework assignment for each day, spelling words, behavior chart, a place for a parent’s initials, and any materials the school gives out. We will have bi-weekly Wednesday FOLDERS that will go home with all graded papers for you to review. The daily planner will help us communicate and be on the same page with your child’s progress. Class Dojo will also keep the communication lines open.
Classroom Management
We will use a clip behavior chart this year along with our Class Dojo. Each child will have a clip with their name on it located on a chart. They will move their clip down or up the chart according to their behaviors. Your child will indicate daily on their planner what number they were on at the end of the day and what rule number they broke. ONLY if your child moves their clip down on a consistent basis will the behavior log be filled in. Tickets earned can be used to purchase class coupons or buy things in the classroom store. The chart follows the numbers below:
5- Wow! Excellent Day! (Earn 3 tickets) 2 - Warning (Owe 1 ticket -Misses 10 min. recess)
4 – Great Day! (Earn 2 tickets) 1 - 2 Warnings ( owe 2 tickets -Misses all recess)
3 - Good Day! (1 Ticket Each child starts the day on green) 0 – Office referral (no recess - owe 3 tickets)
Attendance Policy
In order for your child to be successful in third grade, attendance is vital. School and class instruction begins at 7:45. Students are considered tardy after 7:45. We begin our instruction at 7:45. As mandated by the MCSD, students may be absent from school only 15 days per school year. If a student is absent from school, a note is to be brought from parent/guardian stating a reason for the absence within three school days. A student is considered absent if they check out before 11 PM. A referral to the social worker is initiated after five unexcused absences.
GRADING POLICY
Graded papers will be sent home every two weeks for review in your child’s WOW folder. Some work samples will be kept as part of a portfolio that will be housed in the classroom. The Report Cards will be sent home every nine weeks. Please be aware that during the first nine weeks, I will be asking all parents to participate in a conference. MCSD's Parent Portal is a great resource to use to have immediate information on your child's progress.
A = 100-90 (excellent progress)
B = 89-80 (above average progress)
C = 79-70 (average progress)
F = 69-0 (unsatisfactory progress/failure)
Testing
In third grade, students will be required to take several assessments such as the Common Benchmark Assessment (CBA), Student Learning Objectives (SLO), and Georgia Milestone End of Grade Testing (EOG). During the first two weeks of school students will take placement tests in reading and math to assess their strengths and weaknesses. There will be on-going assessments to track progress throughout the year.
Needless to say that third grade will be a challenging year. As you know, third grade students have to meet or exceed the requirements of the reading portion of the Georgia Milestone End of Grade Testing (EOG) to pass. So that each student will be prepared, it is important that he/she participates fully and takes responsibility for his/her learning.
Classroom Weekly Testing
Tuesday: Grammar Quiz
Wednesday: Vocabulary Quiz
Thursday: Listening Test and Independent Reading Test
Friday: Quick Spiral Review Math Test, Spelling Assessment
AWARDS PROGRAM
At the Awards Program held at the end of the school year, students are recognized with the presentation of trophies, medals and certificates. Students receiving special recognition for academic achievement are invited, with parents and relatives. Students who meet the following criteria will be recognized in the following areas:
Principal’s List – All A’s on the report card for every grading period, no B’s (this is not a yearly average but the face value of each grade for all four grading periods).
· Honor Roll – All A’s and B’s on the report card for every grading period. No C’s can be earned to receive this award.
· Citizenship Award – Each teacher selects one student who displays good citizenship all school year long.
· Excellence in Academic Awards – Each teacher selects their top academic student in the areas of math, language arts, reading, social studies, and science.
· Excellence in Music/Physical Education/Art Awards – One top male and female student from each grade level will be selected and presented a medal for outstanding performance in each area.
· Perfect Attendance – Presented to students with no absences and no more than three EXCUSED tardies.
Birthday Celebrations
Birthday Celebrations According to N.C.E.S. policy, families may bring a special treat for the class during lunch in celebration of a child’s birthday. Flowers, balloons, and gifts delivered to the school for students will remain in the office until the end of the school day. If you are sending invitations for a celebration be sure to include whole class or initiations by gender.
Transportation
Please note that your child’s safety and well-being are very important to me. If your child will be going home a different way than what was recorded on the registration form, I must have a WRITTEN note from you informing me of how your child is going home. If I do not have written permission or a written fax from the office, I will send your child home the regular way regardless of what your child says. I hope that you understand that this is for your child’s safety and protection.
Contact
Please let me know if there are any questions or concern about your child or any procedures. Please contact me at [email protected] . The school’s phone number is 748-3183 Please remember I am here for you and your child.
